How Split Case Water Pumps Work

- Jan 04, 2024-

Split case water pumps have a wide range of uses on power plant, factories, construction, mines, farmland, irrigation projects.

The components of a split case pump are impeller and pump casing. The impeller with multiple backward curved blades is fixed on the pump shaft and driven by an electric motor to rotate at high speed together with the pump shaft.

When the split case water pump started, the pump shaft drives the impeller to perform high-speed rotation, forcing the liquid prefilled between the blades to rotate, and under the action of inertial centrifugal force, the liquid flows from the center of the impeller to the outer periphery. The energy gained by the liquid flowing through the impeller increases the static pressure energy and flow rate. As the liquid leaves the impeller and enters the pump casing, the flow path in the casing gradually expands and slows down. Part of the kinetic energy is converted into static pressure energy and flows tangentially into the discharge pipe.

The split case pump shaft is supported by two single-row radial ball bearings. The bearings are installed in the bearing bodies at both ends of the pump body and lubricated with butter. Double suction sealing rings are used to reduce water leakage from the pump's pressurized water chamber to the suction chamber. The water pump is driven directly by the electric motor through the coupling. The shaft seal is a soft packing seal. To cool and lubricate the seal chamber and prevent air from leaking into the pump, there is a water sealing ring between the packings. When the pump is working, a small amount of high-pressure water flows into the filling chamber through the water seal tube to act as a water seal.
